Princess Mononoke

Why I chose to make this costume:

Studio Ghibli has a very dear place in my heart because it opened my eyes to a genre of animation that I had avoided through high school. Some people will argue that Ghibli is not anime, but to me it always will be. In high school, a group of students really turned me off of the genre by making fun of me and telling me my artwork sucked because I didn’t choose to sketch anime style artwork. A friend forced me to watch Princess Mononoke in college, and I have loved every Studio Ghibli film since. It also allowed me to break down a wall, and learn to enjoy anime to the fullest. I am so grateful to Monoke for this, and this is why I chose to cosplay San as my first Studio Ghibli character.

Thoughts on this costume:

I had the materials for this costume for three years before making it. I had great anxiety on how perfect it needed to be in my head. I’m very happy I waited because the experience I’ve gained over the years really paid off. Sometimes simple costumes are the hardest. I made this costume in just a few days, and it turned out very well. You can read more on the construction in the costume breakdown I wrote.
