Purple Fairy Commission Overview

I know I’ve mentioned that I’ve started taking commission pieces this year. They have been small things here and there, but I recently completed my biggest commission work ever. One thing I have been wanting to start working on in 2016 was children’s costumes. Can you imagine how excited I was when my boss asked if I could make his daughter a costume for Halloween? She wanted to be a purple fairy, which was awesome for me because they gave me free reign on the design.

This was my biggest commission ever since it is the first time that I made every piece of the costume, and I couldn’t be happier with the way it turned out. I also learned a lot making this costume that will go forward with me into the future. Below I included some details about each piece, the materials, and construction of the outfit. Overall, the costume was four pieces: tutu, vest, dress, and wings.

Tutu

This was the easiest part of the costume, but it was also the most tedious. THERE WAS SO MUCH TULLE! I will be cleaning glitter out of my living room for decades. I think before I said there were over 80 yards of tulle in this skirt, but after reevaluating there were actually approximately 255 yards of 3″ strips of tulle in this skirt! Holy cow! There are 5 different colors of tulle in this skirt, including 5 yards of light purple and 5 yards of dark purple of 54″ tulle from Fabric Wholesale Direct. The other 75 yards were purchased in three rolls of confetti glitter tulle colored dark purple, light purple, and silver from Hobby Lobby. To make the tutu you basically tie the pieces onto a strip of ribbon that then ties around the waist.

Dress and Vest

The dress and vest I used charmeuse satin from Fabric Wholesale Direct, and I followed McCall’s pattern M4887. I would like to say it was as simple as that, but it never is. My client was actually at an age where she is in between children’s and adult pattern sizes, so I actually ended up modifying each of these pieces to fit her size. It was a true learning experience. Along with making my own pattern for this I also learned how to sew a proper hem rather than using hem tape/cheating. Unfortunately, I didn’t really take any progress pictures of these by themselves.

Wings

These wings are my favorite. I was able to use my leftover Fantasy Film that I created my Tinkerbell wings from to make her wings. If you are planning on making fairy wings for cosplay this material is really worth the investment. I actually started  a tutorial on how to make your own wings a while back. I should probably finish that at some point… The difference between my Tinkerbell wings and these is that these simply snapped onto the back of her dress instead of being inserted into the dress to make them look more realistic.

Overall, I love how this look turned out. I learned a lot, and it will look super good in my portfolio.
