Tutorial: DIY Starfish Hair Clip

I know it’s been a hot minute since my last post, but honestly, rather than sit around and apologize or make excuses, I’m just barreling forward. Let’s just say, 2019 has thrown a few curve balls at me this year, and I’m learning how to manage.

Inspiration really hit for the first time in a while this past week. I’m really excited to share more with everyone. Today, I want to share an easy tutorial on creating a very simple hair accessory for a pinup Ariel design I will be wearing this upcoming weekend. If you want to make your own, keep reading to find out how!

Also, read all the way to the end for a GIVEAWAY!

Materials

The materials for this are extremely simple, and you could make several hair clips with the materials you need to buy. Everything can be purchased from Hobby Lobby like I did.

  • Large alligator hair clip
  • Starfish
  • Acrylic paint
  • Mod Podge
  • Glitter
  • Pearls
  • Hot glue
  • Paint brush

I already had everything but the starfish and the clips, and I used a 40% off coupon on the starfish. The total price for materials I didn’t already have was less than $5. I still have enough starfish and clips leftover to make at least two more accessories!

How-To

l. The starfish came in a variety of sizes, so play around with them to see how they can be arranged nicely. I ended up going with three smaller stars.

2. Once you have decided on your stars, paint the starfish in whatever color you want. I decided white would be the most standout for my design. You can also skip this step and leave them natural if you so choose.

3. After the paint dries, cover the stars in Mod Podge, and then dump glitter on them so they have a little sparkle. I think going back I would have used a metallic acrylic paint instead of glitter.

4. With the paint and Mod Podge completely dry, apply hot glue to the base clip, and glue the stars down how you want them.

5. Apply pearls using the hot glue wherever you wish. I also used the pearls to cover some areas where the hot glue was showing from gluing them to the base.

6. Obviously, a lot of the decoration steps (2,3, and 5) are completely up to you! Just have fun with it.

7. That’s it. Put it in your hair, and admire your handywork!

Giveaway!

That’s right! I have enough starfish leftover that I wanted to do something fun. I have one extra large starfish, and I want to give away a personalized clip. It will be one starfish decorated in whatever color you want, with glitter and pearls, or without. The rules are very simple, and below:

  • Must be following me on Instagram (@sadiebydesign)
  • Comment on the photo I post tomorrow (I will link it here when the post is up), and tag two friends.
  • That’s it! I will announce the winner on Saturday, April 20, 2019 at 10:30AM.
  • Bonus entry: Repost the giveaway on your Instagram story or feed, and tag me for an extra entry. If you share on both story and feed, I will count it as two extra entries!

Are you going to make your own hair accessories now? Have you entered in the giveaway yet? Did you miss my posts? I’ve definitely missed you, and also writing. Leave a comment below, and don’t forget to subscribe via Bloglovin’ or email to never miss a post!

This is such a cute DIY project!! As someone who lives on the ocean, I feel like this would be a really cute gift to make and gift to friends and family 🙂 I wonder about using real starfish…

I’m not sure, but I got them from the seashell section at Hobby Lobby. I want to say they are real? You could definitely use a mold too if you’re against using real ones.

And I already have been thinking about making them for presents for my mermaid obsessed friends!!! I think they would make great gifts.
