Obstacle Course Racing for Beginners

Believe it or not, cosplaying and being a dork are not the only things I do for fun. One aspect of my life that consumes a lot of my free time is my health. I don’t claim to be one of the healthiest people in the world, but I find that the more I take care of my body the better self-image I have.

Last year, I completed my first trifecta in the Spartan race series. This year, I’m going for my double trifecta. In total, I am already signed up for ten races this year, six being Spartans. The obstacle course race can be intimidating your first time around, and I am saying this as a person who had no desire to even sign up for one just over a year ago. I wanted to share some tidbits that might encourage someone else to get involved.

1) Don’t overpack.
The first Spartan I ran last year we brought soap, shampoo, towels, extra clothes, sweats, enough food to eat for days, and more. Now, when Kelly and I go to leave before a race we sometimes question if we are forgetting something, but it is always enough. Keep it simple. A towel, a trash bag, a good breakfast, water, and a change of clothes/shoes are really all you need. Oh, and sunscreen. Don’t forget sunscreen!

2) Don’t forget sunscreen!
Seriously. Don’t forget it.

3) Do it for yourself.
Coming to an obstacle course race can be intimidating, but when you look around there are all sorts of people who come out for these events for the same reason: they are fun! We all have our own personal goals. I feel stronger when I am finished with these races, mentally and physically. I also do it for the satisfaction of shocking people who didn’t think I’m tough enough for something like this.  Oh…. I also do it for the medal. I love the races, but honest truth I’m really there for the medal. #medalwhore

4) Learn the value of teamwork.
There aren’t very many people who come to these events planning to do the entire thing by themselves. I always run with a team, and we almost always utilize the strengths of others to help us overcome obstacles we wouldn’t be able to conquer by ourselves.

5) Just do it.
But for real, the hardest part is taking that first step. If you don’t try it you’ll never know. I know it isn’t for everyone, but these races have made me gain a whole new level of confidence.
