2017 A Year for Focus

Happy new year everyone! I hope everyone has been enjoying their new year so far. While my 2016 was wonderful a lot of people did not feel the same, and I can get on board with the fresh start the new year brings. I’ve been afraid to write this post because I feel like there is so much potential for my 2017 pent up inside of me, and it’s almost scary to know that it’s already started. Yes, this is the 2017 “new year’s resolutions” post.

If you read my 2016 year in review post maybe you can tell that I have attention problems, and while it was a year for growth it was also a year of feeling frazzled all the time. Growth is great, but if I grow in too many different directions then every aspect of my life starts to suffer. This is why 2017 will be the year of focus. I have spent a significant amount of time thinking about what makes me happy because that is where I want my focus to be. Instead of quantitative goals I have come up with three focuses that will get most of my energy. Here we go.

Personal Relationships

You would think that this would always come first. In a way it really does, but I personally think I can do more here. A lot of the time I feel like I worry too much about everyone rather than the people who are there for me always, and that’s just not cool. Alongside trying to be a people-pleaser I can also be pretty selfish at times. Selfishness is a good thing in the right quantities, but I don’t want my relationships to suffer because I’m overly self involved.

I really truly appreciate the people in my life that have supported me through all of my ups and downs over the past few years of adventure. The best thing about my closest friends and family is that they do this unconditionally. I only want to make sure that I am doing my best to support them in the best way I am capable of, and that I return that love.

Cosplay

Anyone who knows me knows that cosplay is one of my biggest passions and aspirations. My followers grew tremendously in 2016, but my talent did not. If I’m going to be successful in this field of my life then I have to be sensational. Be prepared because I’m really going to make your jaws drop this year. Here are the things I want to do in order to make this come true:

  • I will not be revealing a list of cosplays I plan on doing this year. I don’t like disappointing you or myself.
  • I will focus on larger projects. Yes, that probably means less new cosplays, but it also means better cosplays!
  • I will not do cosplays just because other people want me to do them. My greatest costumes are characters I am passionate about and connect with.
  • I will do my best to make it to more SC Upstate Heroes events. Volunteering in cosplay has been the most rewarding part of this hobby.
  • I will not purchase costumes out of convenience because I could not finish the project I was working on in time.

Health

Maybe some people are rolling their eyes at this because being healthier is one that is on everyone’s list, and a lot of people fail at it. 2016 was bad for me as far as my health goes. Maybe you remember a super personal post that I shared about having stomach problems a while back? This unfortunately ate up a lot of my time last year, and it was no laughing matter. It was finally realized that I have a real problem with lactose, but it has taken even more time to recover from all the months of stress.

What am I going to do about it? My focuses on health are simpler than they were in 2016. I have realized that I don’t do well focusing on one event per year. I joined a goal that is somewhat quantitative, but mainly it is meant to get me back in the habit of appreciating being active on a daily basis again. It is called Run the Year, and the ultimate goal is to walk/run 2017 miles in 2017. The biggest part of trying to be healthier is knowing that what goes in is what you get out. Cooking is awesome, and I’m going to focus on eating healthier.

Of course, my goal is somewhat motivated by cosplay. I want to be my own hero, and for me, that means aiming to feel like a superhero when I’m dressed like one and when I’m not too. When I feel good about my body I feel good about myself, and positive body image really is something that I want to get back after the past year. Mental health is just as important as physical health.

What a great way to look at the new year!

One thing I would love to do is work on some cosplays this year, plus attend a few more cons. Not sure I’ll have time before Comic Con since I’ve got to get more stock ready to sell.

Can’t wait to see what cosplay you come up with. And if you ever need a little DIY help, look us up! We spend a lot of time looking up stuff on cosplay construction when we aren’t actually making things.
