Book Review- Mistborn: The Final Empire

Not that you guys care what my opinions on books are, but I already warned you that I love to talk. Well, I also  love to read, and so I figured why not tell you about some of the great things I read.

I just finished Mistborn: The Final Empire by Brandon Sanderson. There are so many things I love about this book, and very little that I dislike. Let me try to sum it up for you, and don’t worry, I promise no spoilers!

Let’s first start off with the genre of this book. It would definitely be classified as a fantasy type novel. Fantasy is a genre that I love, but I strive to find books that I cannot consider just another version of Lord of the Rings. In other words, I need them to have a twist that sets them apart from orcs, elves, and dwarfs. I love that the author has not only created his own fantasy world here, but he has added an element that is another guilty pleasure of mine, high society. I can totally envelope myself in a book that has beautiful ballgowns, scandal, and dancing. Brandon has taken two elements of writing that I generally have to read two completely separate books to scratch my itch, and combined them into one.

Another one of the big sellers on this book, in my opinion, is that the main character is a female. I feel like you don’t see a lot of fantasy novels written mainly from a female point of view, but that could also be because I didn’t read a whole lot besides for homework while I was chasing down a literature minor. Either way, Vin is a total badass, and I’ve already started to contemplate making my own version of her for a cosplay.

Unfortunately, nothing is perfect, even though this book was dang near it. The only thing that I thought was a bit strange was about two thirds of the way through the author threw another perspective into the mix where he had been writing from two points of view for the entirety of the novel. It threw me off a little bit, but after I got acquainted with the newer perspective it didn’t deter me from reading the last 120 some pages in less than two days.

Anyways, definitely check it out, and support a good author. I’m sure it won’t be long until I post the review on the second in the trilogy. Oh, that’s right, it’s a trilogy, which means you don’t have to be sad after the book is over until book three!
